Since the bicycle was invented, it hasn't changed much in its appearance or how it works. But as we entered the 21st century, things started to change.
Thanks to science, technology, and people's changing needs, the bicycle family got some interesting new members. Scientists, designers, and bike enthusiasts came up with some unusual and exciting bike designs.
1. Foldable Backpack Bicycle
For people who love mountain biking, tough and hilly terrain is a common challenge. Riding on such rugged ground requires special equipment and a lot of strength and determination because you might have to carry the bike on foot sometimes.
Regular bikes may not be up to the task, but the foldable backpacking bike is here to help. It's small, lightweight, and can fold into a portable backpack-like shape in under two minutes.
2. Solar Bicycle
Imagine effortlessly overtaking a fellow cyclist struggling up a hill while you cruise on your solar-powered bicycle (Cycle Sol). As the name suggests, this bike harnesses the power of the sun, turning sunlight into the electricity needed to propel it forward.
It even has a special canopy for shielding you from the sun and rain while also collecting solar energy. It's perfect for those who prefer not to exert too much physical effort.
3. All-Weather Bicycle
One of the most common reasons people give up on cycling is their aversion to getting drenched in the rain. While all-weather bicycles aren't a brand-new concept, they seem more practical now than ever.
These innovative bicycles are designed by Swedish designers, and their standout feature is a transparent canopy, offering protection against various unexpected incidents.
It's a cool concept, but critics point out that these bicycles lack side shields, leaving riders vulnerable to splashes of mud and water from the road.
4. Amphibious Bicycle
In the city of Helmond in the Netherlands, where canals are part of the road system, a unique type of bicycle was born – the amphibious bicycle. It was designed to let people in Helmond cycle on both land and water.
This bicycle looks quite different from traditional bikes, but it's perfect for navigating the city's waterways. While it might appear larger than usual, it's a fantastic solution for getting around in this watery city.
5. Computer-Aided and Fingerprint Recognition Anti-Theft Bicycle
This bicycle takes a departure from traditional bicycle design in several striking ways. Its wheels lack spokes, minimizing wind resistance.
The tires are highly puncture-resistant, the chain is concealed within the frame, and its overall design embodies simplicity. What sets this bicycle apart are the additional features: a solar panel and a fingerprint recognition device.
The solar panel provides power to the bicycle, making uphill climbs effortless for riders. The fingerprint recognition device, on the other hand, serves primarily as an anti-theft measure, ensuring that only the owner can use the bike.
Within the bicycle's handlebars resides a miniature computer capable of calculating the rider's calorie expenditure based on pedal strokes. It's truly a bicycle of the future, and even its designer believes it may take at least 20 more years to realize.
