Tulips are a beloved and iconic flower that have captivated gardeners and flower enthusiasts for centuries. With their vibrant colors, elegant shape, and striking appearance, it's no wonder that tulips have become a representative of spring.
But do you know the origins of these beautiful blooms? And how can you bring their beauty to your garden?

The Origins of Tulips

Tulips are native to Central Asia. In these regions, tulips grew wild, thriving in the cool, arid climate. It's believed that tulips were first cultivated and introduced to the Western world in the 16th century when the Ottoman Empire began trading and sharing these stunning flowers.
From there, tulips quickly gained popularity, especially in the Netherlands, which became the epicenter of tulip cultivation and trading. The "Tulipomania" craze of the 1630s saw tulip bulbs become incredibly valuable, with some rare varieties selling for more than the price of a house! While the tulip bubble eventually burst, the Netherlands retained its status as the world's premier tulip producer, a distinction it holds to this day.

Visiting the Netherlands for Tulips

If you want to see tulips in the Netherlands, you have to pick the right season and go to the right spots. Here are some tips for a tulip trip in the Netherlands.
Peak Tulip Season
The peak tulip season in the Netherlands is usually in the latter half of April through early May. This is when the majority of tulips are in full bloom across the country's famous tulip fields and gardens. The blooming season can vary a bit each year depending on weather conditions, but generally, the best time to see the vibrant tulip displays is from mid-April to the first week or two of May.
Keukenhof Tulip Festival
The incredible showcase of tulips in the Keukenhof tulip festival should not be missed! Keukenhof is a large public garden that opens annually from late March to mid-May, allowing visitors to experience the tulips at the peak of their bloom.
It's highly recommended to travel by car and you need to pay €20.00 for an entrance ticket and €10.00 for a parking service. Alternatively, you can book a direct Keukenhof bus tour from Amsterdam in advance through the website Tours & Tickets. The bus tour price is approximately €35.00, depending on the time of your visit.

Other Tulip Fields
In addition to the Keukenhof Gardens, the Netherlands is renowned for its sprawling tulip fields. Popular tulip field destinations include the Bollenstreek region, the Noordoostpolder, and areas around cities like Lisse, Leiden, and Alkmaar. The fields typically reach their vibrant peak in late April.

Growing Tulips at Home

Growing tulips in your garden is a rewarding and relatively straightforward process. The best time to plant tulips is in the fall, typically between October and November when the soil is cool but not yet frozen. Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil, and plant the bulbs about 6-8 inches deep and 4-6 inches apart.
Be sure to add a bit of compost or fertilizer to the soil before planting to give your tulips a nutrient-rich foundation. Once planted, cover the bulbs with soil and water thoroughly. Over the winter, the bulbs will develop strong roots and prepare to burst forth in the spring.
